Distillery automation

Consistent spirit, safe handling of ethanol, and production records that hold up to excise reporting and audits.

Where control matters in a distillery

  • Grain handling and cooking. Milling, mash bills by recipe, cook and conversion temperature profiles, and enzyme additions.
  • Fermentation. Fermenter temperature control, yeast addition and monitoring, tracked per batch.
  • Distillation. Column and pot-still control: steam, reflux, temperature and pressure profiles, and cut points. This is where consistency and energy use are decided.
  • Proofing and blending. Dilution to target proof and blend recipes, with gauging data recorded.
  • Storage and transfers. Tank farm inventory and transfers recorded for production and excise reporting.
  • Utilities and by-products. Steam, cooling water and stillage handling.

Design points we pay attention to

  • Hazardous locations. Ethanol vapor areas need correctly classified electrical equipment, enclosures and wiring methods. We design panels and field devices to the area classification your engineer or insurer establishes.
  • Separation of safety functions. Critical safety interlocks are engineered as distinct, documented functions, not buried in the general control logic.
  • Records. Batch reports and transfer records structured to support your production reporting. Traceability →
  • Recipe flexibility. Many mash bills and products on shared equipment, managed as ISA-88 recipes. Batch control →

Bring the log book. We'll tell you what fits.

Show a Freelance engineer how your batches are run and recorded today: a new process, a line expansion or a control-system migration. We'll tell you plainly whether a DCS, a PLC or something in between is the right next step.
